Computational Lexical Semantics at ESSLLI 09

Just another weblog

General readings on Lexical Semantics and Computational Lexical Semantics

  • Jurafsky, Daniel, and James H. Martin. 2009. Speech and Language Processing: An Introduction to Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, and Computational Linguistics. 2nd edition. Prentice-Hall. [Chapter 20 contains a good introduction to empirical Computational Lexical Semantics (WSD, SRL, word similarity, etc.).]
  • Levin, Beth. 1993. English Verb Classes and Alternations: A Preliminary Investigation. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press. [A classic on verb classes and the syntax-semantics interface.]
  • Pustejovsky, James. 1994. The Generative Lexicon. Cambridge: The MIT Press. [Also a classic; contains a good discussion on why enumerating word senses is a bad strategy.]
  • Saeed, John. 2008. Semantics. Third edition. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell. [Stefan’s favourite introductory book for semantics.]

Psychological approaches to meaning/concepts

  • Murphy, Gregory L. (2002). The big book of concepts. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press. [Handbook of psychological studies about concepts. Contains one chapter about word meaning.]
  • Rosch, Eleanor. 1975. Cognitive representations of semantic categories. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 104, 192-233. [One of many influential papers by E. Rosch on prototype theory.]

Thematic roles / Semantic Role Labeling

  • Dowty, David. (1991) Thematic proto-roles and argument selection. Language, 67: 547-619. [A paper anyone interested in lexical semantics should read.]
  • Màrquez, Lluís, Xavier Carreras, Kenneth C. Litkowski, Suzanne Stevenson. 2008. Semantic Role Labeling: An Introduction to the Special Issue. Computational Linguistics 2008 34:2, 145-159. [CL has a recent special issue on SRL, that’s the best place to start.]

Inter-annotator agreement

  • Artstein, Ron, Massimo Poesio.  2008. Inter-coder agreement for computational linguistics  (survey article). Computational Linguistics 34(4): 555-596.
  • Boleda, Gemma, Sabine Schulte im Walde, Toni Badia. 2008. An Analysis of Human Judgements on Semantic Classification of Catalan Adjectives. Research on Language and Computation 6(3): 247-271
